今天我們來學習三組同義替換，一個動詞短語，兩個動詞。我所挑出來的這些詞匯不僅可以用在閱讀、翻譯、寫作中，還會在聽力中出現，大家要引起重視哦。

嚴格來說，它們應該是「同近義替換」。因為很少會有一個單詞與另一個單詞完全相同的情況。

01

guard against sth 防止，避免

guard against = avoid

guard 是我們的常用詞匯，不管是名詞，還是動詞，我們都見過無數次。作動詞時，guard 可以表示「保衛，守衛」，所以「守著入口」是 guard the entrance。另外，它也可表示「看守，監視」，這時 be guarded 的滋味就不好受了。

作動詞的 guard 通常只和一個介詞搭配，是哪位幸運兒？燈燈，against。加上它后，整個詞組用來表示 against to take care to prevent sth or to protect yourself from sth「防止某事發生，防范」，可替換 avoid, prevent。比如，guard against accidents 是「防止事故」，guard against disease 是「預防疾病」。這個短語在四六級中多次出現，外刊也常用。好，下面我們來瀏覽《經濟學人》的例句，兩次用到了這個詞組。其中，futures 指「期貨」而不是「未來」，不能變成 future 哦。

Futures are a tool for producers to guard against prices plunging and for consumers to guard against them soaring.

期貨是生產者防范價格暴跌和消費者防范價格暴漲的工 具。

如果是「防止做某事」，這時候我們要寫作 guard against doing sth。

Nurses should guard against becoming too attached to their patients.

護士應該防止自己對病人產生過多的感情依戀。

soothe 緩解

soothe = alleviate

That may have contributed to doubts about the Fed’s ability to walk and chew gum—to fight inflation and soothe market strains.

喜歡的那個人笑起來特別「治愈」，「治愈」二字怎么說？學會這個單詞就可以夸人夸得與眾不同了。這個單詞意思是 「安慰，撫慰」，與 calm 類似。比如，soothe your nerves 是指「讓自己放松下來」。對應的形容詞是 soothing，所以「治愈人心的笑容」就是 a soothing smile 。

此外，soothe 還可以用來表示 to cause (pain) to go away or become less severe「緩解」疼痛、焦慮等，與 relieve, alleviate 相近。下面我們來看《經濟學人》的一個例句，其中 in one sense 意思是「從某種意義上說」。

In one sense that is a good thing, for it soothes fears about safety.

某種意義上這也是件好事，因為緩解了人們對安全的擔憂。

prize 重視

prize = value

Big advertisers prize video ads (and report record engagement on TikTok, where products have gone viral with the hashtag #TikTokmademebuyit).

熟詞生義

這個單詞誰看誰熟，但我們卻不能忽視這顆小詞。因為 prize 除了表示名詞「禮物」外，還可以作動詞。提到「重視」，腦海中首先蹦出的是哪個單詞？pay attention to？value？從今以后，你還可以蹦出一個 prize。因為它作動詞時也可以表示「重視」，而且是「高度重視」。所以 prize our friendship 是「珍視友誼」的意思。這個用法在外刊中非常普遍，我們來看個《經濟學人》的例句。

In rich countries consumption has shifted from the sorts of electronic goods that are prized by people working from home to the services people enjoy when they are able to move and mingle.

在許多富裕國家， 消費已從居家辦公者看重的各種電子產品轉移到人們能自由出行交際時享用的各色服務。
